What it teaches

How to read a Nutrition Facts label (servings, calories, %DV, what’s low and high), work out calories from protein, carbs and fat (4/4/9), scale USDA food data to real portions, add up a meal, compare foods by protein per 100 calories, and turn a target you already have (from a coach or dietitian) into grams and “what’s left today”. The AI asks 3 questions, places you, shows a short card per module, then gives one food problem at a time and checks your answer against keys computed by script.

No diet or medical advice. It never sets your targets or tells you what to eat. It teaches the maths.

How long

30 items. About 25-40 rounds plus a 12-item final: 2 sessions (estimate, not timed with a real student). The tutor gives a one-line save code at the end of each session.

Before it teaches, it asks

  1. 1
What brings you here: the gym, tracking food, a class, or just reading labels better? Do you already count calories or protein?
    AI voice (ElevenLabs)
  2. 2
A frozen lasagna label: 280 calories per serving, 4 servings per container. You eat the whole thing. Calories?
  3. 3
    A serving has 10 g protein, 30 g carbohydrate and 5 g fat. Calories by 4/4/9?

Computed by script
Every key; 9 of the 11 listed wrong answers reproduced by applying the slip; the script also checks every food value it uses against the USDA table.
Sourced
Label rules and Daily Values from the FDA’s Nutrition Facts pages; food values from USDA FoodData Central (USDA food ID listed for each); 4/4/9 from the Atwater system. 24 quotes and values matched against the live pages on 2026-10-10, and every food value re-fetched from the USDA API.
Approximate by nature
4/4/9 are general averages; food databases often use food-specific factors, so totals differ: a few percent for egg, about 11% for banana and 21% for broccoli (the course shows the banana).
Raw weights
The chicken values are for chicken weighed raw; cooking changes the weight, and that’s not in this version.
Not in it yet
Vitamins and minerals beyond the listed DVs, alcohol, supplements, cooking changes to food weight.
