What it teaches

What the basic investing words mean (stock, dividend, capital gain, index fund, expense ratio, load, market vs limit order, bid/ask/spread, diversification, rebalancing, dollar-cost averaging, bull and bear markets), and the maths behind them: total return, compound growth and the rule of 72, why a 50% loss needs a 100% gain, EPS, P/E, market cap, dividend yield, what fees cost over 20 years, average cost when you invest monthly, and how to rebalance. The AI asks 3 questions, places you, shows a short card per module, then gives you one question at a time and checks your number against keys computed by script, naming the mistake when it’s a common one (“you divided by the selling price, not what you paid”).

No advice. It never tells you what to buy, sell or hold. It teaches you to read the numbers.

How long

55 items. About 45-60 rounds plus a 12-item final: 3-4 sessions of 15-20 rounds (estimate, not timed with a real student). The tutor gives a one-line save code at the end of each session.

Before it teaches, it asks

  1. 1
What brings you here: a first brokerage account, a work retirement plan, a class, or curiosity? Have you bought a stock or fund before?
    AI voice (ElevenLabs)
  2. 2
The stock trades at $40 and EPS is $2.50. What’s the P/E ratio (1 decimal)?
  3. 3
A stock falls 50%. What percent gain does it need to get back to where it started?

Computed by script
Every maths key. 28 of the listed wrong answers come with the mistake that produces them, and the script runs each mistake to prove it really gives that answer; the rest (yes/no and choice traps) are checked to differ from the key.
Sourced
Definitions from the SEC’s Investor.gov glossary and pages (US government), 29 quotes matched word for word against the pages on 2026-10-09; dividend yield from Wikipedia (dated).
Simplified on purpose (said in the items)
Fee drag uses “return minus expense ratio”; yearly compounding unless the item says otherwise.
Not in it yet
Taxes, retirement accounts, bonds beyond current yield, options (see the Options Basics course), crypto, reading a real company’s annual report (see the Reading Financial Statements course).
